Louis has described the song as the one he's "most proud of" and the one he "put the most personal touches on". He described the lyrics as being about "when you come to the end of a relationship and you always find yourself seeing that person one last time. It’s that moment...if you can read between the lines".[1]

Rolling Stone called Love Me Goodbye a "power ballad" that "follows in the heartbreak footsteps of recent track "History" and is accompanied by a string orchestra to make the track even more booming"[2].
Music and Lyrics described the song as having a "nice, deep sentiment and sadness caused by heartbreak, but surprisingly One Direction made sure there was room for “naughtiness” too", in reference to the sexually charged lyrics.[3]
