Lyrically, the song laments a bad breakup.
Background[]
In a newsletter sent to fans on September 15, Niall described the song as "very special to me" and explained "a lot of time and thought went into it". He told press he considers it one of his favorites on the album. He told BBC News: "I would obviously like it to go to number one, that would be the dream, but it is what it is. If it's getting a lot love and jumps in at number two or number three, I don't mind." He also revealed the song was written much earlier in the recording process: "I actually wrote this song the day after I wrote "This Town" so I felt like it got off to an alright start when I started writing the album. It's a very nice, beautiful song and means a lot to me. Hopefully fingers crossed that people are going to like it, obviously a lot different to "Slow Hands".
Release[]
On 14 September 2017, Horan announced the single would be released worldwide at midnight EST. It first appeared on Spotify and YouTube.
Reception[]
Too Much To Ask was positively received with Mike Wass of Idolator saying: "Niall Horan's solo career continues to go from strength to strength with the arrival of 'Too Much To Ask.' A tender ballad about hankering for an ex, the track showcases the Irishman's simple, heartfelt approach...a beautifully crafted song". Rianne Houghton from Digital Spy praised the song: "Gird your loins, and your tear ducts 1D fans! Niall has released his latest single and it's definitely a tear-jerker. Seriously Niall, who hurt you?"

Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
Waiting here for someone
Only yesterday we were on the run
You smile back at me and your face lit up the sun
Now I'm waiting here for someone
[Pre-Chorus 1]
And oh, love, do you feel this rough?
Why's it only you I'm thinking of
[Chorus]
My shadow's dancing
Without you for the first time
My heart is hoping
You'll walk right in tonight
Tell me there are things that you regret
'Cause if I'm being honest I ain't over you yet
It's all I'm asking
Is it too much to ask?
Is it too much to ask?
[Verse 2]
Someone's moving outside
The lights come on and down the drive
I forget you're not here when I close my eyes
Do you still think of me sometimes?
[Pre-Chorus 2]
And oh, love, watch the sun coming up
Don’t it feel fucked up we're not in love
[Chorus]
My shadow's dancing
Without you for the first time
My heart is hoping
You'll walk right in tonight
Tell me there are things that you regret
'Cause if I'm being honest I ain't over you yet
It's all I'm asking
Is it too much to ask?
[Bridge]
My shadow's dancing
Without you for the first time
My heart is hoping
You'll walk right in tonight
Tell me there are things that you regret
'Cause if I'm being honest I ain't over you yet
[Chorus]
My shadow's dancing
Without you for the first time
My heart is hoping
You'll walk right in tonight
Tell me there are things that you regret
'Cause if I'm being honest I ain't over you yet
It's all I'm asking
Is it too much to ask?
[Outro]
It's all I'm asking
Is it too much to ask?
It's all I'm asking
Is it too much to ask?
