Two Ghosts is the fourth track, and second official single, from Harry Styles self-titled debut album.
Lyrically, it laments the lost innocence and simplicity of a former relationship.
Background[]
It was confirmed Two Ghosts was a track Styles had written years earlier for One Direction, but kept it and used it for this album because: "...some things are more like personal notes and you don't want anyone else to sing it. I subconsciously held onto it. It lived in my emails and now it is born."
Speculation[]
Whilst media speculated the song referred to Taylor Swift, fans speculated whether the song referred to Louis Tomlinson. Styles and Tomlinson lived together in 2011, while Styles dated Swift in 2012. Styles has not confirmed who the song is about, but called it "self explanatory". The Swift speculation comes from similarities in the opening verse lyrics ("Same lips red, same eyes blue, same white shirt") to lyrics from Swift's 2015 single Style: "I got that red lip classic thing that you like/You got that long hair, slicked back, white t-shirt".
Release[]
Two Ghosts was released as the second official single on August 8, 2017. However, Styles only minimally promoted the song, performing it live twice on two separate episodes of The Late Late Show With James Corden. The single did not receive a music video.
Lyrics[]
Same lips red, same eyes blue
Same white shirt, couple more tattoos
But it's not you and it's not me
Tastes so sweet, looks so real
Sounds like something that I used to feel
But I can't touch what I see
We're not who we used to be
We're not who we used to be
We're just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me
Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat
The fridge light washes this room white
Moon dances over your good side
This was all we used to need
Tongue-tied like we've never known
Telling those stories we already told
'Cause we don't say what we really mean
We're not who we used to be
We're not who we used to be
We're just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me
We're not who we used to be
We're not who we used to be
We're just two ghosts swimming in a glass half empty
Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat
We're not who we used to be
We're not who we used to be
We're just two ghosts standing in the place of you and me
We're not who we used to be
We don't see what we used to see
We're just two ghosts swimming in a glass half empty
Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat
Trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat
I'm just trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat
