“If I Could Fly”
November 13, 2015
Harry Styles, Johan Carlsson, Ross Golan
If I Could Fly is the sixth track from Made in the A.M. It was released globally on November 13, 2015.
Lyrically, the song is about revealing strong romantic feelings for a lover while being separated from them.
If I Could Fly was written by Harry, Johan Carlsson and Ross Golan. Harry previously wrote Ariana Grande's song Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart with Carlsson.
Songwriter Julian Bunetta talked to Rolling Stone about hearing If I Could Fly for the first time, stating "I remember when Harry first played it to me. That one I didn't write, but I remember when I first heard it. We were in Westlake Studio for a week. I kept asking why he wanted to call it 'If I Could Fly.' It's a great song, so it doesn't really matter what it's called, does it?"
Many fans have noted the seriousness behind the lyrics and speculated as to who the song may be about. Some have noted the song was written in April 2015 when Harry was in Los Angeles alone. Fans also noted it was written at the same time Louis and Liam wrote "Home" together (along with Jamie Scott), which has left many fans wondering if the two songs are related to one another. While the title "For Your Eyes Only" seems to suit the song better, Styles insisted on "If I Could Fly". Many fans have noted "If I Could Fly" and "Home" form a complete sentence when merged together. Fans also noted Harry tweeted the song title on a day when Louis had travelled to America, while he was still in the United Kingdom. As is the case with One Direction's more controversial songs, the band has not yet spoken about the song's meaning.
The song was first revealed through the North American listening sessions held for "Made in the A.M.". Fans were treated to a video of the band in their younger years as the song played for the first time. Many fans noted the footage featured many scenes focusing solely on Harry and Louis, including previously unseen footage, leading some to speculate the song may be about them.
On November 6, Harry tweeted the song's title, despite it not being officially released at that point.
