Lyrically, it describes begging a former lover to return.
Producer Jeff Bhasker described the song as:
"drawing from this rich tradition of the past, and of rock music, but it’s totally new sounding. Nothing out right now sounds like this song. It’s minimal and it’s magical. It takes you to another world. I was reminded of when I first dropped the needle on a Pink Floyd album I had never heard before. I’m not a big [pop] music listener. Harry made a classic rock album. That’s hands down my favorite song on the album."
The song was well received by critics, with Rolling Stone dubbing it "psychedelic pop", and Rob Sheffield describing it as having "a touch of John Lennon echo, a touch of Jimmy Page in the acoustic guitar – as Styles pleads like a love junkie craving a fix". MTV News stated the song "reaches back through Muse, through Coldplay, through The Verve’s “Lucky Man,” through Oasis’s most demure moments, back to Donovan circa Mellow Yellow".
